Using Online Social Networking to Market Your Business

You may love or loathe it but you cannot ignore it. You just blinked and the world had changed. Everyone is using Facebook and Twitter and any illusion you might have had that a closeted, socially minimalistic-type existence would be possible had been blown out of the water.

Online Social Networking to Market Your Business

To enrich their life experience, hoards of people are seeking out others with the same interests, who share their passions and can make product recommendations based on first hand experience. The implications this has for your business are mind shattering. If you could just tap into that communication stream, you would have a ready and already well predisposed audience of potential customers.

This is why using online social networking to market has become so popular. In the old days, advertisers would broadcast blurb about how wonderful their product was to the masses. Well they would hardly say otherwise would they?
The problem, of course, was that the public were not stupid and blatant self-promotion, in the form of advertisements, often fell on deaf ears. Social networking offers a new approach. Now, product review is peer to peer by word of mouth, which is far more believable to the masses.

So, if using online social networking to market your business is something you'd like to get into you may be wondering where to start. Somehow, you need to make your entry into the network, most importantly, without ringing alarm bells, alerting fellow members to the fact that you are about to use old-school methods of spamming and hard sell which of course you are NOT.

You could simply become a member of a social networking site and build up a group of freinds or followers who have interests that might predispose them to your product. Then, you could just join the conversation. Alternatively, you could become a member of, for example a Facebook group, highly related to your product niche.

Better still, you could start your own Facebook group and slowly build up a tribe of enthusiasts that you can supply with information, invite to online and offline events and occasionally discuss your product with. Over time, this would establish you as an expert in the field. Hence, if you are thinking of using online social networking to market your product this would be an excellent first port of call.

How Online Social Networks Help Build Businesses

Many have turned to using online social networks as a part of their business development strategy and for good reason. Marketers have come to recognize that social networking online is a very effective strategy in terms of growing a solid foundation for their businesses.

Online Social Networks
Online Social Networks
Here are 3 important components every internet business development strategy needs that can be supplied when using these sites.

Link Building
One of the things social sites can do for any internet business is to build links with other individuals and organizations. Having incoming links from an assortment of origins on the internet helps boost the search engine rankings of your own site. This typically translates into more free traffic which is highly targeted and of course the best type you can get. Plain and simple, having move inbound links thereby places more attention on your site and is another reason social networking online is an effective strategy for marketers.

Branding
Establishing an online brand is something that helps you become more competitive since it makes you 'stand out' from other marketers! The need to be easily recognizable is a must in the very competitive internet environment! Building yourself a brand will help you do just that and this is typically done by 'reinforcing' the identity you've chosen as often as you can. When any marketer engages in social networking online, this simply creates another 'venue' in which they can build and establish a brand! Remember, these communities can be very viral in nature which is why they are so effective for brand development.

Traffic Generating
We spoke above about how link building helps increase the search engine traffic you receive. Another source of traffic you can expect would be not only members of the sites you are working but also people who have been referred by these members. The viral potential offered when promoting on these sites is significant if you consider that site members likely 'belong' to other sites as well. Much like an onion that has many layers, there is no telling where on the internet your links may end up! Harnessing the incredible powers of viral marketing should always be an objective of every internet business development strategy.

Online social networks are being more commonly used as part of many marketers business development strategy and with great results! Although social networking online does require an emphasis being placed on relationship building it has proven to be a very effective strategy. The 3 components every internet business needs are reviewed above and can be acquired when social networking online! This helps to explain the popularity of this very effective strategy and why you should consider included this approach in your own marketing mix as well.

Fun Free Online Games & Social Networking

Computer and video games have become very popular. In particular the interest in playing fun free online games over the internet is increasing strongly.

Despite the growing popularity of YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook, gaming remains the king of online entertainment, driven largely by casual gaming activities.

Fun Free Online Games & Social Networking

Sites like Yahoo Games and EA's Pogo.com offer users access to a wealth of advertisement supported free online games, where sponsors have options for branding opportunities, and display and banner ad placements.

Online games on the consoles could become a $10.5 billion business by 2011 from $981 million in 2007, according to market researcher IDC.
In 2007, online console revenue is at 2.5% of total global video game market revenue, including console and handheld hardware and software revenue. By 2011, revenue from connected consoles will represent 18.6% of total market revenue.

Although subscription revenue for premium online services and games will grow from $476 million in 2007 to over $2.4 billion in 2011, its share of online console revenue will decline from 48.5% in 2007 (already down from a high of 86.5% in 2006) to 23.2% by 2011.

Downloadable content (DLC) consisting of games and game-related items, which at $35 million in 2006 represented a 13.5% market share of online console revenue, will become connected consoles' primary revenue source in 2007, growing from $493 million in 2007 to $7.2 billion in 2011. In 2011, game-centric DLC will make up 68.6% of online revenue.
Advertising revenue from sponsored services, in-game ads, and product placement in connected consoles will reach $12 million in 2007, posting the first significant online console ad spend. Advertising revenue will grow to $858 million in 2011, with an 8.2% market share of online revenue.
Video game growth will be strongest in the Asia Pacific region, its largest market, with a 10% annual growth rate through 2011, but will increase in the Europe/Middle East/Africa region (10.2%), the U.S. (6.7%), Canada (9.4%), and Latin America (8.2%) as well.

Certain trends hold steady across most regions: For instance, driven by increased penetration of broadband access, online gaming is surging. In the U.S. and Europe/Middle East/Africa, online gaming represents the fastest-growing consumer segment (19.3% and 24.6%, respectively); in Asia Pacific and Canada, online growth came in second only to wireless (at 16.1% and 13.9%, respectively). Other trends are more regional. The in-game advertising market is expected to increase 64% in the U.S. And in China it is expected to rise at a compound annual rate of 14.3% to $2 billion in 2011, most all of that growth will come in online games.
Spurred by the new generation of consoles and handhelds, and by increased penetration of broadband and wireless technologies, the video game industry is ripe with opportunity. "Growth in platforms allows you to hit new demographics," says Stefanie Kane, a partner with PwC's entertainment and media practice, noting that handheld game devices have brought more women into the market, and that the entrance of cable and on-demand TV channels will further widen the base. "There is a lot of unlocked potential."
You might think the face of one of the hottest areas in gaming right now is a young male in his 20s who owns the latest supercharged gaming system from Microsoft or Sony - or both.

But you'd be wrong.
Instead, the epitome of the new-era gamer is a woman in her late 30s or early 40s who plays on an average PC.

Yes, the video game industry seems to have been turned on its head.
For years, the dominant themes have been faster game machines, increasingly realistic graphics, more immersive play, as well as the old standbys - blood, guts and blowin' stuff up.
But that picture has begun to look increasingly outdated. While young men dominate the gaming industry as a whole, casual games are one of the fastest-growing parts of the industry and attracting a whole new demographic.

You can find signs of the revolution everywhere. One of the fastest-growing parts of the game industry is centred on so-called casual fun free online games, PC-based titles that users can generally start playing in minutes and usually don't require the mastery of some combination of multiple buttons to enjoy.
The upheaval has spread to the console market, as sales of Nintendo's Wii console and DS handheld, both of which stress fun-to-play games over powerful processors or realistic graphics, are far outstripping their supercharged competitors from Microsoft and Sony.

Revenue streams enabled by active online consoles in this cycle show the strongest growth in the sector and will not only determine the future success of the console vendors but also be crucial to the success of many third-party publishers.

MEMES

What is a 'Meme'?
A "meme" is a virally-transmitted cultural symbol or social idea. A meme behaves like a flu or a cold virus, traveling from person to person quickly, but transmitting an idea.
Historically, a meme is a discrete "package of culture" that would travel via word of mouth, usually as a fascinating story, a fable/parable, a joke, or an expression of speech. Today, memes travel much faster than simple speech. As internet email forwards, instant messages, and web page links, memes now travel instantly via the Internet.

We are going to transform PROVERBS or a SAYINGS into Digital ones.

MAKE MEMES WITH ADAPTED SAYINGS

The process could be as follows:
  1. Choose saying.
  2. Adapt it to the new forms of communication.
  3. Choose a free image rights. In this way you can get them from: https://pixabay.com/es/
  4. Make the meme. You can use:
  1. Share it on the padlet at the bottom. You will find there some examples. Do not forget your name and course.
  2. Share it on Instagram, Twitter and/or Facebook with the hashtags: #RedConsejos and #SaramagoConsejos.
  3. Share it on your blog.

Privacy

How can I protect my digital identity?
You can protect your digital identity on the Internet by being alert to scams, employing strong passwords, installing anti-virus and anti-spyware software and keeping it up-to-date and checking your settings in your social networks accounts and your operating system. But, there are still more things you can do.
Think twice!
Hold on a minute. Before you post that image, blog or tweet, consider the content. If it breaks even one of these rules, think really hard about putting it out there!

DO NOT...
Send a picture to someone via email/snapchat/instagram that you wouldn’t want your teacher, boss, principal, or grandma to see!
Sure you are sending them to your good friend or significant other. But what happens when that person is no longer your best friend? Or maybe their phone gets nabbed by someone with less morals.
The online proof: There are many sites that allow people to submit naked photos of their exes. I have taken down the links because they are NSFW (Not Safe for Work) and a breach of privacy.

Post personal information that is not readily available
Think about the last time you had to recover a password online. Was the question: Pet’s name, childhood street, kid’s birthday or mother’s maiden name? Make sure that kind of information stays private and don’t use it for the actual passwords.
The online proof: Here are the most common and hackable passwords.

Announce when you are going away
Yes, your friends are excited that you only have 3 more days until you leave for Hawaii! But so is the guy that has been staking out your house.
The online proof: The website PleaseRobMe.com is a collection of data from various social sites that tells you who is away. This one is for educational purposes but ....

Underestimate what your device or computer already knows about you
All online content is tagged with metadata which contains anything from the timestamp it was created to the location. You cannot see the metadata when you post but simple free software can pull it for someone else. Be wary of geotagging on mobile devices, which marks where you took the photo.
The online proof: Check out I know where your cat lives for a series of random cat pictures pulled off the Internet and then tagged to the location where they were taken using hidden metadata.

Forget to set your privacy settings
Not only should you check your settings at the outset but you should recheck them frequently. Facebook, for example, uses an ‘opt out’ policy which means that by default you are sharing more information until you go in and update those settings. Follow us on Twitter or Facebook or join our mailing list to get those updates sent to you.
The online proof: Here is a fantastic infographic that shows how Facebook privacy settings have changed and what data is now available if you haven’t updated them.

Post negative comments about your highschool/workplace or classmates/teachers/coworkers
Even if your teacher, boss, classmate or coworkers are not able to see your comment, a future employer could see that comment and reconsider hiring you later. Even with privacy settings set, you are at the mercy of our online friends not to share.
The online proof: Here are examples of people actually fired due to their social post.

Post photos of your friends that break the first rule
It is a great photo of you. So what if your friend is doing something in the background that would tarnish their reputation? If you tag them, your friend can remove the tag, but unless the photo violates terms and conditions (allowing a site to pull it down) only you control the permissions on that photo. Put yourself in their shoes (and hope they would do the same). This goes double for pictures of underage kids. If the child is under 18, you technically need the parents permission to post it.
The online proof: This article talks about the inability to remove someone else’s photo.

Use the same password for every account
I know it is a pain to remember different passwords for all of your sites but it is an even bigger pain if someone hacks in to one of your accounts. Are you using the same password for your social networks, banking, or online shopping? If a hacker finds just one instance of your password then they will now have access to everything.
The online proof: Here is just one example where hackers breached the Adobe database and were able to access users’ Facebook accounts because the email-password combinations were the same.

Digital Identity

After these tasks...
How are you defining YOUR digital identity?

Our digital identity, or tattoo, is the permanent collection of data about us that is available online. Each time we post a picture, a blog, a status or a tweet, we are adding to that digital identity. As more online applications become part of our daily lives, our digital identities become increasingly more detailed. There are over a billion pieces of content added to Facebook every day!
But it is not only what you do but what others do!

Sharing every detail of your lives online is a great potential risk.

What does our digital identity say about us? Who is reading this information? Who is storing this information? What are they doing with it? What impact will it have on our future? What does it say to future employers? The Dean of Admissions? Our descendants? Your insurance company?

New publication on Palmyra

Together with colleagues Jørgen Christian Meyer and Nils Anfinset I have a new edited book out. Very little networks, but lots of Roman Near East. These are the proceedings of a conference we hosted at the Norwegian Institute in Athens in December 2012 as a part of a research project on Palmyra. It brings together results of international fieldwork and research on the Syrian caravan city until the start of the Syrian civil war. The book can be bought in paper or as e-book from Archaeopress. LIB-NATS HAVE YET TO PRODUCE A REPUTABLE BUDGET : MEANWHILE THE RICH, POWERFUL & CORPORATE ARE REFINING THE ART OF TAX DODGING. READ MORE.

Australia doesn’t have a spending problem, it has a revenue problem. Over 30% of corporations based in Australia in the last financial year paid NO TAX, while the majority of those that paid tax paid less than 5% tax.

It is obvious to everyone, except our Federal politicians, that Australia has a revenue problem. While on a daily basis the corporate owned media carries on about welfare fraud and the burden carried by the community because 33% of Australians rely on old age, disability, unemployment and single parents benefits to survive. How many Australians know that Murdoch owned News Corporation (which owns over 70% of Australia’s newspapers) received an 886 million dollar tax refund during the 2013/2014 financial year and paid NO TAX during the 2014/2015 financial year, while 21st Century Fox, Murdoch’s other media arm, paid less than 1% tax during the same period?

It seems, in Australia, there is one set of taxation laws for corporations and another set for the rest of the community. Unless Federal politicians, of all political hues, are willing to make corporate taxation revenue their number one priority during 2016, we can expect to be told, ad nauseam, there is not enough money for
PUBLIC HEALTH,
PUBLIC EDUCATION,
PUBLIC HOUSING,
PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE,
SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS.

Petition without Response: Diplomatic Language in the Christian Apologists

'a rescript from Hadrian in Justin Martyr's 1 Apology, in the medieval manuscript Parisinus graecus 450, fol. 239
(Source:
gallica.bnf.fr / Bibliothèque nationale de France)

By Birgit van der Lans

The Easter break – when Norwegian cities depopulate but the traditional Påskekrimi provides for some excitement – gave me opportunity to write a few words to introduce myself and my research on this blog. For about two months now I have very much enjoyed being associated with the NeRoNe project, after moving from Groningen to Bergen to join the research group "Ancient History, Culture and Religion" as a guest researcher. The coming year I will be working on a project (funded by a contribution from the Niels Stensen Fellowship) on the roles and expressions of religion in the diplomatic networks of the early Roman Empire.

Birgit van der Lans joins the
NeRoNE group as a guest-
researcher for 2016.
When we think about ‘diplomacy’, we associate it with international relations, with foreign affairs and with a professional diplomatic service to negotiate relationships between autonomous nation states. In the context of the Roman Empire – as Fergus Millar has made clear – the distinction between external diplomacy and internal affairs is less appropriate. The relationship between Rome and the local polities that had become part of the Empire was managed by a system of ‘internal diplomacy’ in which the emperor and other Roman officials received embassies and responded to the countless demands and requests by very different types of subjects.

Just like contemporary diplomatic practice is no longer the exclusive terrain of nation states, the social agents who took part in diplomatic exchange were diverse: besides cities, provincial councils or client kingdoms, embassies were dispatched by local religious associations, ethnic communities, and the ‘world-wide’ organisations of athletes and theatrical performers. City magistrates, high priests presiding over different sorts of associations and skilled rhetors were selected as envoys and amassed prestige by acting as brokers. Diplomatic connections were formed by such travelling persons, but also by the exchange of written documents: petitions, honorific decrees and imperial rescripts were copied, circulated, archived and displayed by interested parties.

This complex administrative system can be analysed as a social network with nodes, hubs, edges and clusters and flows. I think that the network perspective helps us to understand change and continuity in the imperial administration, but I will be looking mainly for the religious practices, concepts and agents that constituted – or impeded – diplomatic relations.

My chronological focus will be on the Hadrianic-Antonine period, when Christians began to participate in diplomatic networks – or at least claimed to do. From the second century onwards we hear of several Christians - Justin Martyr, Melito of Sardis, Athenagoras of Athens, among others – who addressed petitions to the emperor and used diplomatic forms and language to package ‘apologetic’ writings, in which they defended Christianity against accusations of atheism, incest and cannibalism. I suspect that the activities of these new diplomatic agents, who can be placed among other ‘intellectual’ diplomats associated with the Second Sophistic, offer a fruitful entry point to understand the intersection of religious and diplomatic networks in this period.

I hope to give some updates on this blog about developments in research and other planned activities – starting with my first talk for the research group "Ancient History, Culture and Religion" this Thursday (the 31st). A few days later I will travel to Canada for 6 weeks of research at York University, where I will be working mainly on the diplomatic activities of Greco-Roman associations, and a talk for the Ottawa Early Christianity Group. When I come back to Bergen, the Påskehare is long gone, but the 17. Mai celebrations will soon offer the next occasion to explore Norwegian traditions.

Monday 11 April; Sunday and Monday, 24 April and 25 April; Sunday 1 May: Ecological Literacy. Ecological literacy was initially used by David W. Orr and physicist Fritjof Capra in the 1990s, to understand the Earth as a living system whose well-being was dependent on our thinking in terms of the interdependence of all living systems. In his Web of Life Capra writes of the emergence of a new paradigm challenging the old mechanistic and linear view of the universe and challenging notions of continuous growth and development and with it consumerism and commodification as the “normal”. Ecological literacy is about using this interdependent view of the world to help address the complex dilemmas around the destructive impact that humans have had on the world bringing us to what is often called the Anthropocene… And together we'll draw on the experiences and wisdom of all participants, and the 'natural world' around us. Cost $800. Further details: info@oases.edu.au.
